QUAKE DAMAGE: Shops, offices, homes and churches reduced to rubble. © Nigel Spiers

Following the devastating earthquake that struck Christchurch last week, international rescue crews continue to search through the debris in the city's Central Business District. Authorities expect the death toll in the South Island's largest city to rise beyond 200. A third of the buildings in central Christchurch are likely to be demolished following the 6.3-magnitude quake.
Domestic and international flights are operating out of Christchurch Airport (CHC) however the airport recommends passengers contact carriers directly to check airline schedules.
Government agencies are advising against any non-essential travel to Christchurch. Additional capacity is being provided for residents, relatives and emergency service providers who need to travel to and from Christchurch. Air New Zealand is providing reduced fares on all domestic flights and compassionate international fares for immediate family members.
Meanwhile on Monday Accor said it will donate NZD 2 to the Christchurch earthquake appeal for every room sold throughout its New Zealand network through March 31. In addition, the Accor Foundation is providing an immediate donation of NZD 20,000 to the Red Cross emergency programmes in Christchurch. Currently, three of Accor's hotels in Christchurch are closed, while one hotel, All Seasons Christchurch on Papanui Road, is providing accommodation for emergency workers only.
