The International Air Transport Association has sharply criticized European governments for their lack of leadership in handling airspace restrictions following the Icelandic volcano eruption. Speaking at a press breakfast in Paris on April 19, Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s director general and CEO urged a re-think of Europe’s decision-making process.
By last weekend, with a large proportion of European airspace closed by the Icelandic volcano ash cloud, hundreds of flights from Asia Pacific to Europe were grounded and tens of thousands of passengers found themselves stranded.

According to reports in the Qatar media, the Middle Eastern state has put a hold on plans to make drastic changes to its visa rules. Qatar recently announced plans to cancel visa-on-arrival schemes for 33 countries as of May 1.

Etihad Airways will start flying between Abu Dhabi (AUH) and Baghdad (SDA) on April 26. The five return services per week to Baghdad will utilise two-class Airbus A320 aircraft. “We are committed to building and strengthening ties in our region and we are pleased that Etihad will be the first airline in the U.A.E. to fly to Iraq,” said James Hogan, chief executive, Etihad Airways.

Korean Air’s preliminary results for the first quarter of 2010 recorded the highest-ever operating profit numbers for the first quarter.
