The sky turned yellow, grey or hazy across Greater China this week as numerous cities experience exceptionally poor air quality and low visibility.
As seasonal sand storms, swept in from Mongolia, Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) issued a visibility warning and a number of flights were delayed. Pollution levels hit 1,500 micrograms of dust per cubic metre. Chinese authorities issued the highest pollution warning and urged people to stay at home or wear masks if they had to go out. Provinces across northeast China have also been affected by these storms caused by the erosion of topsoil, deforestation and growth of desert throughout the country.
Media reports on Monday suggest, Air China will take a USD 100 million stake in Shenzhen Airlines. This will increase China’s national carrier’s stake in the airline from 25 to 51 percent and build its presence in southern China.

China Southern is rolling out its branded premium-economy class service on all domestic routes using Boeing 777-A, 737 (next generation) and Airbus A319, A320, A321 and 330-200/300 series aircraft. The Guangzhou-based carrier’s premium-economy class seats have 35–37 inch seat pitch, compared with 31 inches in its economy class.
